DPI vs pixel dimensions

DPI metadata tells print software how many image pixels should fit into one printed inch, but it does not create new detail. A 3000 x 2400 image can print at 10 x 8 inches at 300 DPI regardless of whether the file metadata says 72 DPI or 300 DPI. The metadata changes default placement size; the pixel dimensions determine available detail.

For web images, DPI usually does not matter. Browsers display images by CSS pixels, layout rules, and device pixel ratio. For print, start with required physical size, multiply by target DPI, then check whether the image has enough pixels.
