Understanding the alpha channel
Alpha values range from 0 for fully transparent to 255 for fully opaque. Values between them create partial transparency used for soft edges, shadows, antialiasing, and fades. A white background inside an image is not transparency; checkerboard and alpha-mask views make the difference visible.
