How GIF compression reduces file size
GIF size is driven by pixel dimensions, palette complexity, and frame count. Scaling down usually gives the largest reduction. Lowering colors is effective for flat graphics, while frame skipping helps long animations.
A highly optimized source may become larger after re-encoding; the comparison panel reports that honestly.
Perguntas frequentes
Will compression preserve animation?
Yes. The browser decodes and re-encodes animation frames, subject to browser support.
Why does the result sometimes get larger?
The original may already use stronger optimization than a browser re-encode can reproduce.
What does frame skipping do?
It removes intermediate frames and extends retained frame timing to reduce data while keeping the overall pace close.
Which browsers work best?
Current Chromium browsers provide the most consistent animated GIF decoding through ImageDecoder.
